The US Postal Service and Lucasfilm are planning to commemorate the 30th anniversary of "Star Wars" with a bunch of special promotions.
The first will be these special R2D2 mailboxes that will be deployed in several cities. It will be a teaser for the stamps that will be released soon after.
If you're a movie buff and a Star Wars fan, but can't afford to have a Death Star Home Theater, this is a more affordable alternative. And just as geeky.
Recently unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this week, the R2D2 Mobile Entertainment System is made by Nikko Home Electronics. It features:
a projector for screens up to 80" big
built-in DVD system
a dock for your iPod to listen to music and project video
lights & sounds of R2D2 so it seems like the droid is really in the room
fully motorized so you can move it from room to room
a Millenium Falcon remote control
Star Wars fans, get your geek on now!
Check out a couple of write-ups about it here and here.
[Updated 08/25/2006] Another video clip added below.
The summer in the US is coming down to a close. Hence, the dearth of good movies that have been released the past few weeks in Manila. (In case your wondering, as of this writing, the only movies worth watching are "Click" [highly recommended] and "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" [but only if you're in a mababaw mood].)
So thank God for the Internet, and for the popularity of YouTube!
Enjoy a clip from the Stephen Colbert Report that shows his geek roots. A week or so ago, he did a bit in front of a green screen, doing a mock lightsaber fight. He then asked viewers to do their creative best with it. The results below...
And here's a Daily Show bit on the newly released "Snakes on a Plane". I have to give this movie credit for milking the most out of the media. The studio knows it has an incredibly weak premise, but their ace-in-the-hole is the leading man, Samuel L. Jackson! So SLJ has been doing the talk show route, promoting the hell out of it. His best appearances are on the Daily Show because he gets to curse as much as he wants, and just have fun! Enjoy the clip!
Some deleted scenes from the original Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope) have cropped up on YouTube. As far as I know, these deleted scenes have never been released in any of the DVD (or LaserDisc) extras of the Star Wars films!
First, please raise your glass to Biggs Darklighter, known to most viewers as the dude with the mustache flying the X-Wing fighter who helped Luke Skywalker destroy the Death Star. He suffered an almost completely anonymous death when Darth Vader shot down his fighter.
In the original Star Wars, he was just another X-Wing pilot, and if you watched the movie enough times, you'd be able to piece together that his name was "Biggs". When the Special Edition of Star Wars was released, he had a little more screen time when Biggs appeared in the flight hanger scene and said "hi" to Luke. At most, the scene established that Biggs was a friend of Luke from a while back. I guess George Lucas was trying to add emotional impact of his passing when Darth Vader blew him up. So his death was not as anonymous as before, though the inclusion of his scene seemed frivolous.
With these deleted scenes, however, we see the character of Biggs as was originally written. It turns out, Biggs is actually the best friend of Luke Skywalker from his home planet of Tattoine. Biggs confides in Luke his intentions of joining the Rebel Alliance and fighting the Empire. Because Biggs is a big influence in Luke's life, Luke starts toying with the idea of joining the Rebellion as well.
Given their friendship, Biggs' death should have had more emotional impact on us. Instead, he'll be known to most as the dude with the moustache who flew the X-Wing fighter. Ah well, them's the breaks in Hollywood and the cutting room floor...
Next, we have an early edit of the Cantina scene. It's interesting to watch because you see Han Solo as a bad-ass scoundrel! He's first seen with some chick on his side, and he really does shoot Greedo first (as many purists rejoice). Guess George didn't want Han to seem too much of a jerk, thus the edited scene in the original movie. This deleted scene also gives a little peek at movie making as we hear some raw, unedited dialogue, with no post-production dubbing done.
Now, even more videos to watch while taking your coffee break and/or pretending to be working until you can leave the office.
There are rumors afloat on the Internet that Apple is going to have some major announcements on their World Wide Developers Conference on August 7, 2006. Many speculate that Apple will unveil their true video iPod, especially since it's been more than 6 months since their last iPod-related announcement.
This video pokes fun at Apple's penchant to release new iPod products at an accelerated rate. It seems no sooner than you purchase an iPod when a new model is launched. Of course, it doesn't seem to stop people from upgrading their iPod immediately. Guess it's like the need for people to have the latest cell phone all the time.
The video game industry is on the virge of its latest console war, with
Microsoft firing off the first shot when it launched the Xbox 360 last
November 2005. In response, the Nintendo Wii and Sony Playstation 3
will fire their volleys in the last quarter of 2006.
Who will
come out on top? Who knows... (I'm rooting for Nintendo, personally.)
But to commemorate the developing console war, this
video pokes fun at the main competitors.
Whatever side you choose, I think you'll all be entertained.
This next video highlights the talents of Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey. Who knew he was so good at making impressions? See him (with a cast member of Saturday Night Live) poke fun at well-known actors and Star Wars at the same time.
Finally, I've been curious about Tom Cruise and his increasingly erratic (and sometimes outright weird) behaviour over the past year. With every news item that comes out, I'm getting more and more convinced that he's a nutjob -- especially when I saw this video clip from "The Daily Show" that summarized scientology in a nutshell...
Just a little change from all the recent video game related posts I've been making. Time for another Star Wars related post instead!
A short video of Yoda and some Clone Troopers chillin' in the background. I have to give credit to whoever made this, because the CGI work was fantastic! It looks like they even used motion capture equipment to produce this clip!
A very rich Star Wars fan (who I suspect works for Microsoft because the home is in Redmond, Washington) had a company set up his 10-seat home theater to look like a room in the Death Star. Featuring designs from Doug Chiang of Lucasfilm, this room will make you feel the power of the dark side! Click here to view the room...
And on anther bit of fun sites to view, another incredible Lego sculpture. This time it's a full-scale replica of a football (aka soccer) stadium somewhere in Europe. It features over 400,000 Lego pieces, lights for evening football matches and working fireworks! Click here to view the stadium...
Just as the subject title mentions, this is a creation by another certified Lego professional artist and former Lego master model builder named Nathan Sawaya.
Further proving that some people have too much time on their hands... but at least this guy found a way to make a living out of it.
Keeping with the geeky tradition of my posts on Multiply, I thought it would be appropriate to start the new year with this little tidbit.
There was a recent item on Ebay that would make any toy and/or Star Wars enthusiast proud: a one-of-a-kind Rebel Attack Cruiser built out of Legos!
This 8-foot sculpture was designed and built by a master Lego builder, and was put up for a charity auction for Habitat for Humanity. The winning bid was for a whopping US$31,602! Either there was a very generous philanthropist, or a very rich collector must have had a lot of spare change...
Even if the Star Wars saga is complete, the merchandising will never die! On Starwars.com, they introduced a new tie-up with Hasbro, and are releasing a Star Wars/Transformers hybrid.
Talk about hitting 2 geek demographics with one stone...
I like watching "The Apprentice". It's like having a mini-MBA
class each week! What I also find interesting are the different
sponsors for the tasks given each week. It's like the sponsors
are getting a 1 hour commercial for their product/service.
There's an episode where "The Apprentice" is tying up with Lucasfilms/Lucasarts for the simultaneous launch of the Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith DVD and Star Wars Battlefront II
video game (PC/PS2/Xbox) that came out last November 2 in the
States. I'm very curious on what they did on that episode.
Probably something worth downloading.
Another PC case modification for Star Wars geeks everywhere! We've seen the TIE Fighter, Millenium Falcon, X-Wing Fighter, and a Death Star subwoofer. Now to present, the R2D2 PC case!
Just check out the links to the article and pictures below.
The perennial debate between which is better, the PC or the Mac, has now escalated to even geek-ier proportions.
Behold... PC vs. Mac Millennium Falcon Case Mods (modifications)!
In one corner, the PC Millennium Falcon is definitely hard core.
The innards of a PC has been fit into an old Millennium Falcon toy from
the original Kenner toy collection from the 70's or 80's. Aside
from the CPU/Millennium Falcon, an X-wing Fighter toy has been modded to
become the mouse! And a keyboard has been modified to match the
used future tech look of the Falcon.
In the other corner, a Macmini has been stripped off it's top casing,
and stuffed in a Playskool Millennium Falcon case. There's a USB
port in front to stick in an iPod Shuffle, and the cockpit of the
Falcon has been modded to fit an iSight!
It's a marvel of engineering, fanaticism, and too much time on their hands... Ladies and Gentlemen, please click here or on the picture to view this wonderful audio feat...
Whether you're excited about Star Wars Episode III or not, I think we
all can agree that Star Wars has had some great movie tie-in
commercials with other companies! Check out some of the funnier
ones out there...
