As I've posted before, I love the Discovery Channel's show, Mythbusters. If you aren't familiar with it, it's basically a show that scientifically debunks urban myths.
Sometime in April 2007, the Mythbuster crew shot an episode that deals with ninja myths that you often see in movies. As an added bit of fun, they invited the Ask a Ninja ninja to show up and give his two cents worth.
What is "Ask a Ninja"? It's a cult-hit comedy video podcast that features a Ninja that will answer any question under the sun, no matter how mundane or strange. And chances are, the ninja's answers are just as strange, if not more so.
This is an interesting video made by a college professor explaining US Copyright Law, Fair Use and Intellectual Property. The twist is he made it using clips from Disney animated movies. :)
Synopsis: Professor Eric Faden of Bucknell University provides this humorous, yet informative, review of copyright principles delivered through the words of the very folks we can thank for nearly endless copyright terms.
Another brilliant video from the cast of Saturday Night Live.
In this clip, Adam Samberg and guest host Justin Timberlake pay homage to the R&B love song genre. They come up with a song about the perfect gift for Christmas. But as they claim in their video, this gift is perfect for any occasion, the whole year round. :)
Back in the day, everyone was enthralled by a Japanese game show called "Takeshi's Castle". It was basically a wacky obstacle course with mazes, rubber-suit monsters, and ingenious traps designed to eliminate hundreds of contestants. Eventually, the contestants would be whittled down to a handful who would storm Takeshi's Castle for the grand prize.
The show was undoubtedly Japanese, and that tradition apparently still continues today. "Ninja Warrior" basically pits hundreds of contestants to overcome obstacles that a ninja would supposedly do. But whereas Takeshi's Castle was open to anyone, Ninja Warrior requires contestants be physically fit with a great sense of balance for the extreme challenges.
This video highlights Nagano Makoto, one of only 2 people to finish the entire Ninja Warrior course. Watching him move is like watching a live video game, like "Prince of Persia".
This will now bring up the question: who's more angas -- a ninja or a Spartan?
A couple of years back, some engineering students from UC Santa Clara were bored and decided to decorate their building with a tribute to Super Mario Bros. -- done in Post-Its.
Now, a new batch of students have made a sequel of sorts, and have come up with a more elaborate tribute to Donkey Kong, complete with giant monkey, damsel in distress, barrels, girders, and Mario -- again, all done in Post-Its.
Ok, I admit, I have a soft spot for these incredibly geeky things that people do with their spare time.
By now, most people have heard of the Nintendo Wii, which comes with the Wii Sports game that includes a simple bowling game. LEGO Mindstorms, on the other hand, is a toy line from LEGO that is targetted at teenagers and young adults. Basically, it allows you to make simple robots using LEGO bricks, some motors, and software to program your robot with. It has a good following around the world, especially with burgeoning robotic enthusiasts.
So some guy recently gets a Nintendo Wii, and being a Mindstorms builder, decides to make a Wii Bowling robot. He gets it to automatically bowl a perfect game...
The US Postal Service and Lucasfilm are planning to commemorate the 30th anniversary of "Star Wars" with a bunch of special promotions.
The first will be these special R2D2 mailboxes that will be deployed in several cities. It will be a teaser for the stamps that will be released soon after.
Jj sent this incredibly disturbing yet compelling video over the weekend, and I must share it with the world!
Some Pinoy dude posted a video project he made for college in 1999. It's a commercial for "Jonel's Brief" (or brip, if you prefer). A wonderful mix of 80's music, male dancing, and underwear...
Fair warning: the images, music and lyrics may be stuck in your head for quite a while!
Something that appeals to the sloth in all of us...
A software engineer decides that he doesn't quite want to let go of his college lifestyle, so in his spare time comes up with a modification to a mini-fridge that launches a can of beer (or any other beverage) to his spot on the couch.
The launcher has a payload of 10 cans, plus is even activated by remote control. I know of several guys who would be genuinely interested in this...
As I mentioned in my Christmas post, I'm a fan of the comedy "Scrubs". If you haven't seen it yet, it basically follows the lives of a bunch of young doctors and nurses through the eyes of the main protagonist, Dr. John "J.D." Dorian (played by Zach Braff).
Scrubs is one of those under-appreciated comedies that has a steady following that has kept it alive and well over the past 6 seasons. If you like the style of humor of "The Simpsons" or "Arrested Development", you'll like Scrubs. And just like those shows, Scrubs isn't afraid to experiment, coming up with wackier ways to push the comedy envelope.
A perfect example is the latest episode called "My Musical". In it, a patient checks in with a strange ailment -- she hears music and singing from everyone, including herself! With this premise, the creatives at Scrubs partnered with the Tony Award-winning creators of Avenue Q to come up with the music and lyrics to this episode.
This excerpt focuses on the strong bond between best friends J.D. and Turk. Since all musicals have a love song in it, it's just so Scrubs to make that song between two dudes...
The Nintendo Wii has been out for almost a couple of months, and it's an early success for Nintendo. The Wii was a best-seller during the Christmas season, had a lot of positive stories from the mainstream media, and just general good word-of-mouth. So it's no surprise that the Wii would be a subject for the many fan-made videos on the Internet...
Yesterday saw the release of a funny (and a bit racy) video that explores the intersection between video gaming and the mating ritual...
The classic Charlie Brown Christmas is given a twist when it is edited and voiced by the cast of the comedy "Scrubs". (Which is a great show, by the way...)
Full of one-liners, zingers, and some off-color humor, this was never aired on network television, but most likely shown internally as a gift to the cast and crew of Scrubs. Luckily, someone decided to leak this out to the public. :)
Microsoft recently released a game called "Gears of War" for the Xbox 360, and is currently the best-selling game in its line up, selling over 1M copies in a little over a month.
To promote the dark and gritty game, Microsoft created a commercial with visuals from the game with a cover of the Tears for Fears hit, "Mad World" playing in the background.
Ever since the commercial came out, the sales of that version of "Mad World" in the iTunes music store shot up, introducing a new generation of angsty teenagers to New Wave music.
Ok, so probably 90% of those who've seen the commercial or purchased the song don't know who Tears for Fears is. But you never know, maybe Americans will now know Tears for Fears beyond "Everybody Wants to Rule the World".
In a related (yet quirky) note, some people were inspired to use the same "Gears of War" commercial footage with different music. The best 80's homage has to be the one set to the theme song of "The Neverending Story"...
I love the web and all the weird things people do when they're bored. A group of guys cruisin' for McDonald's decide to spice up the drive through experience by ordering hip-hop style.
The lyrics...
I need a double cheeseburger and hold the lettuce Don't be frontin' son no seeds on a bun We be up in this drive thru Order for two I gots a craving for a number nine like my shoe We need some chicken up in here In this dizzle For rizzle my nizzle Extra salt on the frizzle Dr. Pepper my brother Another for your mother Double double super size And don't forget the FRIES...
Imagine someone doing this in a local McDonald's branch...
Undoubtedly came out on cable tv. Undoubtedly from New Jersey.
A costume store from New Jersey released a commercial in time for Halloween. They specialize in Girls' costumes.
A hilarious video because it's obviously cheap, probably homemade, and it's like watching Tony Soprano hock sweatshop-made items, complete with a Bada-bing girl helping him out.
